does this happen to you?

I was listening to NPR on my way to work in the north bay today. And, I heard the word cadre spoken out loud for the first time in my life. I've been pronouncing it completely wrong in my head for years. The funny thing about this is that I was just talking to someone about this phenomenon in the last week or so. My biggest pronunciation surprise growing up was on a trip for nerdy kids to Washington, D.C. when I was about 16...the word? Bureau. I think this comes from reading a lot as a kid, mostly above your age's typical reading level. Happily, this happened just a few hours before noticing that one of my kiddies is reading Dune. He's in 5th grade, and is one of the "cool" kids in my class. We talked about the book for a minute, his best friend has read the first 3 in the series (also in my class) joined in. I wonder if they can get the subtleties of things that 5th graders don't know about which are important in Dune. I wonder how old I was the first time I read Dune. I think it may have been in middle school, but I know for a fact I was reading books on Dune's level at that age...I wonder what I missed. I also wonder what Cooper (that's the kid's name) will mispronounce in his mind for years.
